As the days get shorter and colder, how can you tell if what you're feeling is sadness or SAD?

Are they not both the same thing, sadness is casued by SAD syndrome?

It is the change over to dark, cold days which make us feel tired and to just want to hybernate which is a natural feeling. A lack of sun exposure has been linked to fertility problems, several forms of cancer, general poor health and varying degrees of depression. People actually get depressed, with symptoms like sadness, fatigue and hopelessness -- from a lack of sunlight.

I bought a SUNLAMP on my therapist urging. I will see if that helps.

I bought a convertible... that was my cure. :) I don't have a convertible anymore, but my car still has a big sunroof that I use almost every day.

I was loaned a sunlamp when I was still a teenager to treat fatigue, and it seemed to help. I stopped using it after a while when I changed my life habits to get more sunlight naturally.

Thats the trouble with England, we dont get to see much sunlight here. Now we probably wont be seeing it until about May next year. But it is still good to get out and about.

I bought full-spectrum lights for my office a couple of years ago. They are supposed to help—I'm not sure though.
I also started riding a motorcycle two years ago. That has been very helpful in giving sunlight and clearing my mind.

Yep, same with the Pacific Northwest. But I wouldn't live anywhere else!

Pouring rain here today (big surprise), but yesterday afternoon we had some sunbreaks. I left work a little early and down went the top. Took the long way home...an hour and a half instead of 15 minutes.

Now THAT'S therapy! :)

I hate the winter because of the lack of sun or the cold temperatures. I love it in the winter when the sun pokes out and it's warm enough to take a walk. I love the spring when the flowers and plants bloom and the birds start chirping and the sun warm my face as the cool breeze blows through the trees. I like somethings about the winter but sometimes I wish I lived in Florida or southern California where it was always sunny.
